About

Based in the South Hams in South Devon, plantingbydesign.com is my garden design practice. I work with builders, architects and landscapers and, in close consultation with my clients, create beautiful gardens. I set up my practice in 2005, having worked part time for many years in a nursery and also as a maintenance gardener.
My qualifications include a BA in Business Studies (University of West London), the RHS Advanced Diploma in Horticulture, NCFE Diplomas in Garden Design and Planting Design and the NCFE Advanced Diploma in Garden Design (Bicton College).

I design and make gardens that are special and unique, belonging to the place and harmonious with their surroundings. I aim to link my clients to their environment through good design and strive to create sustainable gardens, utilising my background knowledge of how both soil and plants behave. I project manage the build and source plants from local reputable nurseries. I am passionate about plants, which I believe bring a garden to life!

My portfolio of past projects will reveal I have no set style, which I believe is a strength. For me, its all about the client and the specific site. I have made large communal gardens, private gardens large and small, a show garden at the Devon County Show and some of my designs have featured on BBC TV.

I am a pre-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers and a full member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture.

The Process
The first stage is a free, no obligation consultation and a look at the garden. I carry out the detailed client brief and make a note of everything you like or dislike, and the requirements for the space. If you are happy for me to continue, I then carry out a site survey, design the garden and draw up the plans. These include concept, design and planting plans.

I project manage the whole build and engage contractors such as hard landscapers, clearance gardeners and tree surgeons, if this is required. I regularly make site visits and of course am in constant touch with you via email or phone.

Plants and Planting

I can source the plants from reputable local wholesale nurseries and carry out the planting, if you would like me to.

The planting finishes off the garden and gets better and better over time as it matures, if managed correctly (I can draw up a care plan for you and your plants). I often make return visits to see how the garden is progressing and give futher advice if needed. And of course its always nice to catch up with clients.
