The Build

This garden has been transformed from an overgrown, steep and unused slope to a garden of three levels. It now has three terraces linked by new safe steps leading from the lower woodland up to the sunny top level, each area with its own unique character.

This garden is formed of a series of interlocking circles and arts and crafts-inspired planting, centred around an impressive old monkey puzzle tree, and also incorporates a circular pond. The garden now enhances the house, which is a beautiful example of Arts and Crafts architecture. A complete transformation from the original crazy-paved childrens' play area to a quiet and relaxing haven in the middle of Torquay.

With views of the sea, the garden of this new build was a blank canvas that lent itself so well to coastal planting, which includes torbay palm trees and drifts of grasses. The circular lawn draws the eye from the surrounding fence and there is a 'secret' sun lounging area tucked away. Built back in 2013, it was exciting to revisit last summer and see how the garden has matured so well. (The lawn had suffered in the drought but soon bounced back.)

A tasteful new build needed a new contemporary garden to match. The new raised beds provide the perfect planting areas for drifts of grasses and perennials and another raised bed houses a spectacular pond, viewed at close quarters from the living room. Strategic beech columns and hedging shelter the garden without hindering the wide countryside views. This project is almost complete and already provides a beautiful and usable space.

June 2019: And now one year on the garden has matured beautifully!

A country garden was not in keeping with its 300 year old Devon cob farmhouse. A traditional style parterre formed of box hedging, filled with bulbs and perennials, now reflects the lines of the farmhouse and provides year round interest. Home and garden are united, one complementing the other.

A small, unremarkable front garden has been transformed into an attractive, low maintenance and eye catching space. Reflecting the lines of this Devon farmhouse, the garden now provides colour and year-round interest when viewed either from the windows or from the lane outside. The planting includes a succession of bulbs and perennials, as well as clemetis clothing the attractive obelisks.
